Acorn Spelling Game

acorn game for kids

Collect acorns and use them to spell out the names of two animals that love to eat those tasty nuts.

What You Need

  • 18 acorns
  • bowl or cup
  • cardboard box, such as a pizza box
  • 1 coin
  • construction paper
  • glue
  • markers
  • scissors

What You Do

  1. Make the Game Board
Cover the box with construction paper to make the game board.
Write “SQUIRREL” on one side of the game board. Write “CHIPMUNK” on the other side.
Cut an “X” under each letter to create holders for your acorn letters.
  2. Prepare Your Acorns
Spell out the words “SQUIRREL” and “CHIPMUNK” on the acorns by writing one letter on each nut. You will have two blank acorns left over. Put all of the acorns in the bowl.
  3. Play the Game
Decide who will be “squirrel” and who will be “chipmunk.” Sit in front of the appropriate animal name on the game board.
Flip a coin at the beginning of each turn. Heads pulls two acorns out of the bowl. Tails pull one acorn out of the bowl.
Use the acorns you pull to spell out your animal name. If you pull a letter you can’t use or a blank acorn, put it back in the bowl and say, “Aw, nuts!”
The first person to spell out their animal name wins.Acorn game
