Sculpt a Topiary Garden or Shaped Plant

Ivy plant

You can sculpt plant materials into amazing shapes, called a topiary garden.

What You Need

  • Bamboo Stake (about 3 feet long)
  • Floral wire
  • Flower Pot
  • Potting Soil
  • Small leafed indoor ivy plant
  • Twist ties

What You Do

  1. Plant the Ivy
Plant the ivy in the flower pot and water it.
  2. Insert bamboo stake
Next, insert the bamboo stake in the middle of the plant until it reaches the bottom of the container. Pat the soil around it to make sure it’s firmly in place.
  3. Shape your butterfly
On the ground, or on a table, shape the floral wire into the outline of a butterfly’s body, wings, and antennae.
  4. Attach butterfly
Attach the butterfly to the stake with the twist ties.
  5. Apply the ivy
Wind the ivy up and around the butterfly.

  6. Enjoy!
Place your container in a bright spot, out of the direct sun, and be sure to water it regularly. Over time, you can keep winding your ivy around the wire so it keeps its butterfly shape. If need be, you can trim some of it, too.
