English Parent Reading Guide

Dec Jan 2025 RR JR Cover polar bearsDear Parents and Guardians:

Every issue of Ranger Rick Jr. magazine introduces your child to fun, new information about animals. This month you and your child will explore how to use numbers to describe things. You’ll also discover some life lessons animals can teach us.

BY THE NUMBERS TEXT

Turn to page 6 and read the article about polar bears with your child. When you get to page 10, explain that this section of the article uses numbers to convey additional information about these bears. Are any of the numbers surprising to your child? Encourage her to use a ruler to measure the width of her foot. How does that compare to a polar bear’s foot?

Then ask your child what numbers can be used to describe her:

  • How old is she?
  • How tall is she?
  • How much does she weigh?
  • How many pets does she have?
  • How many siblings does she have?
  • How many students are in her class?

QR Lessons VideoTurn to pages 16–21 and explain that each of the animals pictured are modeling positive behaviors that people can follow. For example, rather than all rushing to the shore at once, the penguins line up and take turn jumping into the ocean. Ask your child what the students in her class do to take turns. As you read each example in the article, take turns sharing examples of when either of you helped a friend, was brave, worked together, or tried your hardest.

Wishing your family the best for 2025!
