This month your child will learn about an Arctic animal, consider how animal feet are alike and different, and look at animal drawings submitted by other Ranger Rick Jr. readers.

Turn to pages 6–7. Ask your child why she thinks these animals have such shaggy fur coats. (It’s super cold and snowy where the muskoxen live.) Then turn the page and read the rest of the article. Ask her why she thinks it’s important that muskoxen calves grow quickly. (They need to be big and strong before the harsh winter weather arrives.)

Show your child the eight different animal feet pictured on pages 16–17 and read aloud the captions that describe the various feet. Encourage your child to use the stickers on page 2 to match each animal with its feet. Talk about how she decided which feet went with each animal.
Learn more “feet fun” by taking an online quiz about animal feet. Take turns answering the questions.

The pictures on pages 18-21 were drawn by young Ranger Rick Jr. readers. Read the fun animal facts that accompany each illustration. Then ask your child if she can remember facts about other animals that you have seen in this Ranger Rick Jr. magazine.
Encourage your child to draw pictures to go with any facts she can name. Submit your child’s drawings online at RangerRick.org/rickysmail. They may be chosen for publication in a future issue of the magazine.
I hope you and your child are enjoying the cooler weather. Stay warm!
