This month in Ranger Rick Jr. you’ll learn about snowshoe hares, meet twelve pink animals, and have fun naming animals that are different colors. You’ll also practice letter skills when you identify different animals that hang out in the snow.
Show your child the back cover of the magazine and ask, “What color are flamingos?” Can she name any other pink animals? (Most people can’t name any.) Turn to pages 16-21 and read the story together. Which pink animal does she like best? Why? Then ask if she can name any green animals (frog, grasshopper, parrot). Then have fun watching this short video about different colorful animals.

Read the “Ricky and Pals” story on pages 12-15 out loud to your child. Use different voices an expressions as you read what different characters are saying. Stop and ask questions about the story as you read. This is a great way for your child to develop their comprehension skills.

On pages 26-27 show your child the seven animals that are in the snow. Her job is to use the letters in the box to fill in the blank to name each of the animals.
Ask her what animal is sitting on top of the snow in the first photo. If she says, “a bear,” ask if she knows what letter the word “bear” starts with. Write the letter B on the first blank and cross it off in the list.
Continue to ask about the other animals in this way. If your child struggles with spelling the names of an animal, move on to another and use the process of elimination to help her.
I hope you and your child are enjoying winter!
