English Parent Reading Guide

Meerkat Cover RRJR June July 2025Dear Parents and Guardians:

This month’s Ranger Rick Jr. shows how the members of an animal family work together much like members of human families.

meerkats words

Turn to pages 6–7 to read the article about meerkats with your child. After you read #3, encourage your child to look for ways the members of a meerkat mob work together. If she has trouble finding examples, point to #4 (one member looks for danger) and #10 (adults take turns babysitting the pups). Ask your child how the members of your family help each other out.

Now turn to pages 24–25 and take the meerkat quiz with your child. Some of the answers will be obvious after reading the article. Others may require some discussion and process of elimination to get the right answer.

Camping Fun Words

On pages 26-27 are things your family might do when you spend a night outdoors. If you don’t have camping gear, perhaps you and your child can take a hike in a nearby woods or park. Or sit around a firepit and make banana boats or tell ghost stories.

I hope you and your child are having fun outdoors this summer!
