Every issue of Ranger Rick Jr. includes stories and activities about animals. This month you will learn about a tiny squirrel that lives in the desert and meet some unusual looking fish.
On pages 16-19 you’ll find six fish that are named after the animals they look like. Before reading the article, point to a photograph and ask your child to guess the name of the fish. Then read the text to see if your child was right. Repeat the process with the other fish photographs. Then turn to page 20 and match the five pretend fish names to the drawings of fish in the “Silly Sea.”

Turn to page 21 and show your child the Mad Lib. Explain that the two of you will think of words to fill in the blanks to complete the story. For example, one of the blanks asks for a word that describes movement. You might say “hop.” Another asks for a word that is an animal sound. You could say, “ribbit.” Fill in all the blanks and then read your story aloud. Try it again with different words.
ANIMAL SOCCER
If your child plays soccer, she’ll enjoy the game on pages 26-27. Read the list of soccer terms in the yellow box. Then try to match each term to an animal photo. If you aren’t familiar with soccer, you may want to look up the terms on the internet.
I hope you and your child enjoyed exploring this issue of Ranger Rick Jr.
