Every issue of Ranger Rick Jr. magazine introduces your child to new and fun information about animals. This month you both will explore how to use logic and the process of elimination to find the answer to a question.
In every other issue of Ranger Rick Jr., you’ll find an interactive game that encourages children to use their previous knowledge to solve a riddle. On page 26, show your child the illustrations and then read the text.
Ask your child if the forest these animals live in could be near you. Since baboons and impalas live in this forest, we know it must be far away. They live in a forest in Africa.
After reading the first clue on page 27, ask your child if she knows any big cats (lions, tigers, jaguars, leopards, and snow leopards). Read the second clue and ask if having spots rules out any of the big cats on the list. (It can’t be a lion because they don’t have spots. And it can’t be a tiger because they have stripes.) Read the third clue and ask if that crosses any of the remaining three big cats off the list. (Snow leopards don’t sleep in trees, but your child may not know this.)
Finally, remind your child that this big cat lives near baboons. Which big cat does she think is the right answer? Open the flap to see if her guess was right. If your child likes the leopard poster, consider hanging it on a bedroom wall.
Turn to pages 24–25 so your child can practice her letter recognition skills by completing the Word Search. Then have fun playing a game while learning about even and odd numbers.
I hope you and your child are enjoying what’s left of winter.
