In this month’s Ranger Rick Jr., you and your child can learn map reading skills and have fun with colors with an unusual bird.
Turn to pages 6–7 and tell your child that the bird shown is a toucan. Point to where you live in North America on the map. Explain that toucans live in Central and South America shown in green.
Read the article with your child and ask how this bird is different from birds in your neighborhood. (Examples: It’s bigger; It’s more colorful; It has a very big bill.)
Ask your child to name all the colors on a toucan. After you have a list of colors, look through the magazine and find other animals that are these colors:
- Black: skunk (p. 12, 13, and 15)
- Yellow: butterfly (p. 16); meadowlark (p 26)
- Green: grasshopper (p.4 and 21); mantis (p. 17)
- Blue: damselfly (p. 18)
- Red: ladybug (p. 21)
- Orange: giraffe (p. 5); butterfly (p. 19)
Turn to pages 24–25 and encourage your child to color the toucan drawing. Then ask her to find the toucan on each branch with a bill that doesn’t match the others on the same branch.
Enjoy the longer days and warmer weather of summer!
