Every issue of Ranger Rick Jr. magazine introduces your child to fun, new information about animals. This month you and your child will meet many colorful animals.
Turn to pages 16–17 and explain that the animals pictured represent the different colors found in a rainbow—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. As you point to each animal, ask your child to describe it. For example, he might say the crab has a hard yellow shell and eyes that stick up on stalks.
On pages 18–19, take turns naming the various colors found in each of the four animals. For example, if your child said the rainbow finch has purple feathers, you might point out the bird’s yellow feathers. Then your child might point to the red feathers on its head.
Finally, on pages 20–21, point to the blue jay and read the text in the blue voice bubble. Ask your child to find three more blue animals. Name the animals when your child finds them. (If you need help identifying the animals, look at the bottom of the page). Continue this finding game with the other colors.
Turn to pages 12–15 and read the first paragraph of the Ricky and Pals story “Buried Treasure.” Talk about the colors in a rainbow you can see in fall leaves—red, orange, yellow, or green. What rainbow colors are missing?
Ask your child to name her favorite color. Then help her to make a list naming as many things you can that are that color.
I hope you and your family are having a colorful fall.
