English Parent Reading Guide

Cassowary September 2025 Ranger Rick Jr.Dear Parents and Guardians:

This month, Ranger Rick Jr. explores the unusual animal headgear wear. It also uses the letter “S” to teach children about slithery snakes. Have your child find other animals in the magazine whose names start with the letter “S” and play a game identifying animals just by their shapes.

S is for Snake TextTurn to page 16 and point out the large letter “S” in the title. Then read the article together, paying special attention to the “s” words that describe snakes. Ask your child if they found any of the information surprising?

Look through the magazine with your child to find other animals whose names begin with “S.” Did you find them all? (sailfish, p. 5; sea otter, p. 5; bighorn sheep, p 7; secretary bird, p. 11; squirrel, p. 13; snail, p. 15, sea turtle, p. 26)

Animal Shapes textAsk your child if she thinks she can identify an animal just by its shape. If she’s not sure, ask, “Does a butterfly have the same shape as a squirrel?” Then turn to page 26. Take turns naming each of the animals shown. If you get stumped, go on to the next one. You might get all the right answers using the process of elimination.

Now have some silly fun! Turn to page 25. The animals shown here are all wearing the wrong headgear. Help them out by finding the correct headgear for each animal.

I hope you and your child had a great summer.
