A Wolf with a Sweet Tooth?

By Emma Carlson Berne

Wolves like sweet treats, just as people do. Scientists have seen Ethiopian wolves licking flowers to get their sweet nectar. These small African wolves are carnivores that normally feast on small rodents. But some have been spotted lapping away at tall flowers called red hot pokers. These red, orange, and yellow flowers have yummy nectar. The wolves have plenty of rodents to eat, so scientists don’t think they are looking for nutrients. Instead, the wolves are just enjoying that sugary taste.

Scientists think the flowers might be getting something out of this, too. When the wolves lap at the flowers, their muzzles get covered with sticky pollen. Then it’s possible they could carry that pollen from one flower to another, just as bees and other insects do. Thanks, wolves, and enjoy your dessert!
