Adventures of Ranger Rick

Safe Passage

By Hannah Schardt; Art by The CharacterShop
Join Ranger Rick Raccoon, Scarlett Fox, and Boomer Badger in Puget Sound on the coast of Washington State as they learn about safe passages for salmon.
  • Over the past 150 years, people caught way too many salmon for food and to sell. They also damaged salmon habitat by building roads and buildings.

  • By 1999, salmon had disappeared completely from many Pacific Northwest rivers and streams.

  • The culverts people built under roads were often impossible for salmon and other wildlife to pass through. Now, the U.S. government, local agencies, Indigenous Peoples, and conservation groups are working together to fix or replace those culverts.
