The Scoop on Bird Bills

Every bird has a built-in tool that it uses to get the food it eats.

FRUIT PICKER: A toucan reaches out and plucks a piece of fruit off a branch with its long, colorful beak.

WORM CATCHER: A robin has a short, pointy beak. It is the perfect tool for pulling a worm out of the ground.

NUT CRACKER: A macaw has a hard, hooked beak. This strong beak can crack the toughest nuts.

CHOPSTICKS: A curlew has a long, thin bill. This bird picks up insects and other food with its bill the way a person would use chopsticks.

WOOD CHIPPER: A woodpecker pecks wood with its sharp beak. The bird eats insects it finds inside the tree.

STRAW: A hummingbird has a long, thin bill that is good for sipping the sweet juice found in flowers.

FORK: An anhinga (an-HING-uh) has a sharp, pointed beak. This bird uses its beak as a fork to spear the fish it eats.

SPOON: A spoonbill uses its long, spoon-shaped bill to scoop up small fish and other food.
