Snakes are some of the most beautiful creatures on earth. Most of us don’t see them very often, but snakes live on every continent except Antarctica. They number over 4,000 different kinds, or species. Most of these live on or under the ground but some live in trees, and some spend all or part of their lives in the water. 🐍

The largest snakes are the reticulated python, which reaches 32 feet or more, and the anaconda. The anaconda is a bit shorter than the python, but it weighs almost twice as much—maybe 550 pounds. When it comes to small snakes, it’s doubtful that there is a snake shorter than the thread snake—a primitive snake that only reaches 4¼ inches.

The oldest snake on record lived to be over 50 at the San Diego Zoo. It’s possible that older and larger snakes may live in the world’s hidden places.
