Plesiosaurs Across Time
The world is different now than it was in the time of the plesiosaurs— some places that are now dry land used to be at the bottom of the ocean. Plesiosaurs lived in seas all over the world, and today, their fossils have been found on every continent.
Plesiosaurs lived at the same time as the dinosaurs, but with one exception (see page 5), they probably never met. Dinosaurs lived on land, while plesiosaurs lived in the sea. Underwater, plesiosaurs would have met other sea-dwelling reptiles like Ichthyosaurus (ICK-the-oh-sor-us), as well as smaller animals like squid, fish, and shelled creatures called ammonites.
