Ranger Rick is America’s favorite raccoon, and the face of the country’s longest-running children’s nature magazines.

He came to life in 1959 at the National Wildlife Federation, and by 1967, our magazine was connecting kids to the natural world with animal stories, stunning photography, and outdoor activities.

Today, we continue our mission: To instill in young readers a greater understanding of the natural world and a deep love of nature and wildlife.

Our five award-winning magazines for kids, printed in Wisconsin and Massachusetts, include: Ranger Rick, Ranger Rick Jr., Ranger Rick Cub, Ranger Rick Dinosaurs, and Ranger Rick Zoobooks.

We also have a Book Club and create books, events, videos, digital experiences, and merchandise, all designed to help kids and families discover wildlife. Check out our FAQs to learn more about us.

Our Mission in Action

Ranger Rick’s Editorial Principles

WILD ABOUT ANIMALS

Our goal is to spark a lifelong love for wildlife and the outdoors. We do this by meeting children where their curiosity already lives with surprising animal facts, stunning photography, and storytelling adventures that inspire them to explore more.

EVERY KID’S WILDLIFE GUIDE

We help kids discover the natural world with wonder and confidence. Like a good field guide, we make the unfamiliar feel approachable by breaking down big ideas, making what’s small feel significant, and encouraging connections to wildlife right where you are, with what you have.

FUN MEETS FACTS

We make learning playful while staying factual. Our stories and experiences are grounded in credible science, reviewed with care by experts, and presented in ways children can understand. For decades, this approach has earned the trust of parents, caregivers, and educators alike.
