Make a Hippo Crayon Holder

This hippo opens wide to store crayons and other things inside!

What You Need

  • cardboard box
  • large scrap of pink craft foam
  • craft glue
  • 2 googly eyes
  • blue and pink acrylic paints
  • pencil
  • 4 paper pill cups
  • scissors

What You Do

  • Step 1: Cut Box

Draw a horizontal line across the front panel of the box so that it divides the box in half. Extend the line across the two side panels. Cut along the line so that you can open the box as shown.

  • Step 2: Paint Box

Paint the outside of the box blue. Let dry.

  • Step 3: Add Ears and Nostrils

Cut two 6-inch ovals (ears) and two 2-inch circles (nostrils) out of pink craft foam. Paint a light-pink oval inside each ear and a light-pink edge around each nostril. Let dry. Then glue the ears and nostrils onto the blue box as shown. Dot pink whisker holes around the nostrils and let dry.

  • Step 4: Paint Tongue

Open the box and paint a pink tongue in the center of the inside back panel. Let dry.

  • Step 5: Add Cups for Eyes

Paint two pill cups blue. When they are dry, turn them upside down and glue them onto the corners of the box as shown. Glue a googly eye on the front of each cup.

  • Step 6: Add Teeth

For teeth, glue two upside-down pill cups inside the hippo’s lower jaw. Your hippo holder is open for business!
