Dried Apples

These slices of autumn will keep all winter!

What You Need

  • 1 medium apple, washed
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
  • Paper towels
  • 2 cups water
  • Wax paper

What You Do

  1. Slice Apple
Slice off the top of the apple. Continue slicing the rest of the apple, making each slice about one-quarter of an inch thick. Try to make the slices the same thickness so they will dry consistently. Remove the seeds from the slices and discard the top and bottom pieces.
  2. Soak Apple Slices in Lemon Juice
Combine the lemon juice and water in a medium bowl. Add the apple slices and let them soak for about two minutes. (The lemon juice helps keep the apples from turning brown when they dry.)
  3. Dry Slices and Put in Microwave
Remove the slices and pat them dry with paper towels. Layer two paper towels in the microwave. Put a sheet of waxed paper over the towels. Lay the apple slices in a single layer on top of the waxed paper, making sure that the slices don’t touch. Cover the slices with two more paper towels.
  4. Microwave Apple Slices
Set the microwave on defrost (about 30 percent power) for 15 minutes. Remove the slices after they’ve cooked for 15 minutes and turn them over. Cook another five minutes. If the apple slices aren’t dried after 15 minutes, continue cooking at two-minute increments until done. Finished slices will be dry and a bit leathery.

      • Note: Microwaves vary, so be sure to check the apple slices periodically during baking to make sure they aren’t turning brown. That means they are burning.
  5. Let Slices Cool
Allow the slices to cool. Store in an airtight container.Makes 10–12 slices.dried apples
