Hi! I’m @suzieszterhas. I am a wildlife photographer and am thrilled to be taking over @rangerrickmags this week. Some of my work requires a lot of time on my own away in the wilderness from any people, which can feel quite isolating. So it is always fun when I get to work with amazing people like wildlife researchers, conservationists, guides, and trackers. For my story on sloth research I got to work with Dr. Rebecca Cliffe, the world’s leading expert on sloths. Becky started the ingenious Sloth Backpack Project, in which she catches wild sloths, fits them with backpacks containing tracking devices, and then releases them into the jungle. She follows them through the forest every day, watching what they are doing and monitoring their activities. She also started @slothconservation dedicated to saving sloths in the wild, of which I am a proud Trustee. Becky and I became fast friends during our first shoot together and hatched a plan to photograph all six species of sloths (we’ve done five and have one more to go!). We’ve had many adventures together slogging through thick jungle, and spent many long days staring up at a sloth in the tree canopy above. Sloths move slowly and sleep a lot to conserve energy, so sometimes the hardest thing about observing them can be staying awake! A little secret about Dr. Cliffe: Even after nearly a decade of living in the jungle she still has a serious case of arachnophobia and I have seen her run from many spiders. 😂 You can read the full Ranger Rick story “Spying on Sloths”, featuring our sloth adventures, by following the link below.
