Build a Home for Bugs

It’s a perfect time to make a shelter for the smallest creatures in your backyard.

With the weather getting cooler and so much dead plant material around, it’s a perfect time to make a shelter for the smallest creatures in your backyard.

  • STEP 1:

Ask an adult to help you cut the bottom off a plastic peanut butter jar to create a tube. (You can also cut both ends off a medium or large plastic bottle.)

  • STEP 2:

Collect dry materials that you’ll use to create hiding places inside the tube. Collect bunches of seed pods, tall grasses, twigs (as straight as possible), cones, leaves, bits of bark, and other dry, fallen plant material and arrange them in piles by type.

  • STEP 3:

Carefully stuff the tube with the different materials. Start by putting in everything of one type, then adding the next, and so on until the tube is packed tightly in layers.

  • STEP 4:

Set the completed home in a sheltered spot in your yard and see who moves in!
