Learn about animals that eat fish in this month’s issue of Ranger Rick Jr. magazine. Also, read about mountain goats and Earth Day.

Show your child the puffin on the cover and ask why the bird has so many fish in its bill. Then read pages 6–11 and show other animals that eat fish. Explain each have a unique way of catching them. Ask her which of these animals uses its bill like a fork. (The heron.) A pelican also has a bill, but it uses it like a different kind of kitchen tool. Can your child name it? (A ladle.)

On pages 16–21 you’ll find an article about an animal that lives in the Rocky Mountains. While reading the article with your child, ask her to describe two things about mountain goats that help them live in the cold mountains (special hooves and thick fur coats). Then turn to pages 24–25 and take the quiz together to see how much you’ve learned about this animal. Finally, scan the QR code on page 19 to have some fun climbing like a mountain goat.

Turn to pages 26-27 and explain that April 22 is Earth Day, when people across the globe stop to appreciate our planet as well as the animals that live here. To celebrate Earth Day, your family could pick up trash, plant a tree, or just take a walk outside in nature.
I hope you and your child enjoy reading Ranger Rick Jr. every month and getting outdoors to enjoy the beautiful spring weather.
