Every Ranger Rick Jr. magazine introduces your child to new information about animals. With your child this month, meet animals that migrate each year and play a game matching animals to their tails.
Turn to pages 16–21. Twice a year each of these animals travel hundreds of miles to survive. After you read the article ask your child to tell you the reason the different animals move as well as how they move one place to another.
- Snow geese spend summers in the Arctic, where the winters are harsh. In the fall, the birds fly south to find food to eat during the winter.
- Wildebeests live in a part of the world that has a rainy season and a dry season. When the grass they eat dries up, they walk hundreds of miles to find fresh grass to eat.
- Humpback whales like the food they find in cold parts of the ocean. But their babies can’t handle the cold. So, the whales swim to warmer water when it’s time to give birth.
After talking about animals that migrate, turn to pages 24–25 and play the “Chutes and Ladders” style board game with your child. Tell your child that all these animals migrate as well.
Have more fun playing a matching game with your child on pages 26–27. Look at the ten photos of animal tails. Then take turns guessing which tail belongs to each of the animals in the list. You can check your answers on page 3.
MOTION OF THE OCEAN
Finally, get up and dance to the song “Motion of the Ocean.” Turn to page 21 and scan the QR code at the top of the page.
I hope you and your family are enjoying the fall.
