Float a Styrofoam Boat

styrofoam boat

Styrofoam is nasty to have in nature, but this project lets you recycle some styrofoam packaging and have fun at a local stream. Just remember to take your boat home!

What You Need

  • Paper (optional)
  • Permanent markers
  • Popsicle sticks (optional)
  • Styrofoam packaging – ideally a big piece
  • Tape (optional)
  • Small, waterproof, floating toys to be your passengers (optional)

What You Do

  1. Find a piece of styrofoam packaging, the kind that you get with large appliance purchases.
Decide what will be the top of your boat. If there are dents in the packaging, you might put them on top for your “passengers” to ride in.
Test to see if your packaging will float upright in water.
Decorate your boat with permanent markers any way you like.
You can add small flags or fences made from recycled popsicle sticks and paper.styrofoam boat
  2. Float your boat!
With a long stick, you can push it upstream and downstream. You can have races with other styrofoam boats. You can decorate them with leaves, twigs and flowers.girl plays with boat
