
Get loony by making and wearing this loon costume.
What You Need
- 5 large pieces of black craft foam
- Craft glue
- Black, red, and white craft paint
- Paintbrush
- Paper plate
- Loon feet pattern
- Loon wings pattern
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Toilet paper tube
- 2 pieces of black yarn (18 inches each)
What You Do
- Make the Loon Mask
- Cut a two-inch slit in from the left edge of the plate. Repeat on the right edge of the plate.
- Overlap the parts of the plate on either side of the slits by about two inches. Glue in place. Let dry for an hour.
- Cut out a “V” on one end of the toilet paper tube.
- In the middle of the paper plate, cut a circle that is slightly smaller than the toilet paper tube.
- Glue the toilet paper tube to the paper plate so that it sticks out of the hole you’ve just cut. Let dry overnight.
- Cut two small circles for the eyes.
- Paint the mask black and let dry. Then paint red circles around the two holes for the eyes. Use white paint to add the other markings on the loon face.
- Punch a small hole on both the right and left side of the mask. Tie a piece of yarn to each side of the mask.
- Make the Loon Feet
- Download and print the loon feet pattern.
- Trace the pattern on the craft foam. Cut out two feet.
- Cut two holes near the top of each foot.
- Paint web marks on each foot. Let dry.
- Attach to shoes by threading laces through the two holes on each foot. Then tie shoes normally.
- Make the Loon Wings
- Download and print the loon wings pattern.
Roll two large pieces of black craft foam so that they fit your child’s arm. Glue in place and let dry until secure. - Take two additional pieces of black craft foam and use the pattern to cut out two wings.
Paint a line on each feather. Let dry. - Glue one wing to each roll of foam. Let dry.
- Roll each wing so that it fits your child’s arm. Glue in place and let dry until secure.

- Wear Costume
Dress in black and wear your mask, feet, and wings on Halloween or any other day you’re feeling “loony!”
