Hop to It!
By Ellen Lambeth; Art by Brian WhiteAre you a fan of frogs? Check out these frog-tastic facts. Then head outside to see if you can spot—or hear—some froggy friends.

A MATTER OF SIZE
There are close to 8,000 species of frogs (which include toads). The largest is about the size of a newborn baby, and the smallest could squat on your fingernail.
ACE CLIMBER
Could you climb up a wall without anything to grab on to or to hold you up? A tree frog can, thanks to sticky toe pads on its feet.
LEAP, FROG!
Frogs are champs among the world’s wild jumpers. Imagine 40 of you, lying head-to-toe on the floor. Then take an imaginary leap from one end of the line all the way to the other. Would you land past the 40th you? No way . . . not even close! But a cricket frog could leap over a line of 40 other cricket frogs.

FAMOUS FROG
Kermit the Frog might be the most famous frog in the world. But he’s not for real—or is he? Turns out that scientists recently discovered a new kind of glass frog that looks a whole lot like Kermit!

PLENTY TO “DRINK”?
All frogs—even those that spend more time on land than in water—need to keep their skin damp. That’s because they take in the oxygen and water they need through their skin—not their nostrils or mouths!
Rangers: As with most wildlife, there aren’t as many frogs as there once were. They’re affected by poisons in their environment, habitat destruction, pet-trade problems, and climate-change issues.
Many people are working hard to help, including a group called SAVE THE FROGS! There’s also a program called FrogWatchUSA, which keeps tabs on frogs across this country. Here’s an easy way you and your friends could help your local frogs: Clean up trash from areas near streams, lakes, and wetlands. And spread the news that April 28 is Save The Frogs Day!
