SPLISH, SPLASH! Some animals wash with water.

  • A bear soaks in a lake.
  • A penguin showers under a waterfall.
  • A blue jay splashes in a puddle.

DIRT BATHS! Some animals use dirt to stay clean and healthy.

  • An elephant throws dirt on its back to keep biting bugs away.
  • A hippopotamus soaks in mud. When the dried mud cracks off, it cleans the animal’s skin.
  • Rolling in the dirt helps a bison chase off flies. It also helps remove loose hair from its coat.

WASH AND SCRUB! Some animals clean up with a lick or a rub.

  • Japanese macaques (muh-KAKS) pick bugs out of each other’s hair.
  • A mountain hare brushes its fur with its foot.
  • A lion washes her cub with her tongue.
